Material Evolution, a Middlesbrough, UK-based materials company, has recently secured £15M in Series A funding to fuel its mission of producing cement from industrial waste streams. The funding round was led by Kompas VC, with the participation of Norrsken VC, CircleRock Capital, Playfair Capital, At One Ventures, SkyRiver Ventures, and HG Ventures. This significant capital injection will be used to scale up the production of the company's low carbon cement.
Founded by Dr.
Elizabeth Gilligan and Sam Clark, Material Evolution employs proprietary technology that enables the production of decarbonized cement. Their innovative approach involves replacing the kiln used in traditional cement production with an Alkali Fusion process, which allows for cement manufacturing at ambient temperatures. This results in an economical cement alternative that boasts lower carbon emissions and requires less energy to produce.
A strategic partnership has also been forged between Material Evolution and SigmaRoc, a specialist quarried materials group based in the UK and Northern Europe. This partnership aims to develop a range of low carbon concrete products that capitalize on the unique properties of Material Evolution's cement. With this collaboration, the company is poised to make a significant impact in the construction industry by offering sustainable alternatives to traditional building materials.
