Materials Nexus, a London-based advanced materials company, has recently secured £2 million in funding. The funding round was led by Ada Ventures, with the participation of High-Tech Gründerfonds, The University of Cambridge, MD One Ventures (National Security specialists), as well as new investors Michael Eisenberg from Genuine Capital Ventures and angel investors Jasmin Thomas, Andrew MacKay, and Hugh Smith. The company also has existing investors such as Carbon13, G-force, Katapult, and ET Capital. With this new funding, Materials Nexus plans to accelerate the development of its materials.
Under the leadership of Founder and CEO Jonathan Bean, Materials Nexus is a deep tech company that aims to discover materials for sustainable technologies like renewable energy generation, energy storage, and electric transportation.
Their technology combines AI with quantum mechanics to accurately and rapidly predict novel, high-performing, and sustainable materials. Jonathan Bean, a theoretical physicist from the University of Cambridge, realized the need for a modeling platform to address the climate crisis during his time as a research associate. Together with his team, which includes computational physicist Robert Forrest, chemist Dr. Jon Pillow, and commercial lead Nic Stirk, they have been working on an AI solution to accelerate the discovery of new materials by reducing the need for physical experiments. They have achieved this by developing proprietary datasets and machine learning algorithms capable of predicting the properties of new material compositions.
The company's plan for the future is to use the newly acquired funding to conduct real-world projects that demonstrate the efficacy of their AI technologies. These projects include finding alternative materials for batteries and semiconductors, as well as superconductors used in green technologies that currently depend on materials requiring substantial cooling or high pressure. With their innovative approach, Materials Nexus aims to revolutionize the process of material discovery, contributing to the advancement of sustainable technologies and addressing the urgent need for environmental solutions.
