Finding angel investors in London is all about creating, nurturing and growing your network. This involves a combination of pure old school networking, attending events, and using online platforms. Here are some strategies to help you connect with angel investors in London, UK.
You can start by searching for local startup events or entrepreneurship meetups happening in London. You can head over to Meetup who list these kinds of events. Attend these events to meet potential investors and fellow entrepreneurs. Look for pitch nights or networking sessions.
Ok.. so that’s the official way.
But I’d also recommend attending events about your activity. Meet other people who are working on the same thing as you. Become a real active player in this sector. Help out whether that’s online or offline.
We’ve listed quite a few of these angel networks in London above. These groups often have regular meetings and can provide opportunities to connect with angel investors. Joining can sometimes require a membership, so you can check their websites for details.
Remember you can join as a founder looking for investment. But you can also join by offering your help you have a particular expertise. Angel networks are a great place to meet real friends, build trust and reinforce your network.
Startup accelerators are programs that provide mentorship, funding, and resources to early-stage startups to help them grow and succeed.
These programs typically run for a fixed period, during which startups receive guidance, access to a network of mentors and investors, and sometimes office space. In return, the accelerator may take equity in the startup.
The goal is to accelerate the development of the startup, prepare it for further investment, and increase its chances of success in the market.
London is a fantastic place to find startup accelerators. Even if you don’t get in, just the application process will help you structure your project and help you practise your pitching. And of course add potential investors to your network. You may even find a co-founder if that’s what you’re looking for.
I can almost hear the scepticism: "But I don't have a network!"
Guess what? You do!
Everyone you know should be clued into what you're working on. Your next potential investor might be closer than you think.
Case in point: one of my most impressive investors came through my brother-in-law's friend, who happened to be buddies with a highly successful high school acquaintance. Picture this – he hopped on his own plane just to grab coffee with me. Sounds wild, right?
Now, I'm not suggesting you go badgering every family member for funds. It's more about articulating your plans clearly. Plus, it's a fantastic exercise to describe your business to people outside your industry.
You'll be amazed at how those who genuinely like you are always eager to lend a helping hand.
Securing a hot desk in a coworking space is step 1 here. By consistently immersing yourself in the vibrant community of entrepreneurs, you not only establish a dedicated workspace but also significantly enhance your professional network.
For a comprehensive list of coworking spaces in London, check out this resource: Coworking Spaces London.
The top coworking spaces go beyond providing physical workstations. They organise weekly events, spanning business gatherings, pitch sessions, and informal talks. These events offer invaluable opportunities to connect with fellow founders and gain insights into various aspects of entrepreneurship.
Additionally, witnessing other founders diligently working, even into the late hours, can serve as motivation during challenging times – a reminder that the startup journey is demanding but shared.
While a permanent desk in a coworking space is an ideal setup, I know that these desks are not cheap. However, don't let budget constraints stop you from engaging with these spaces.
Coworking communities often extend invitations to events and occasionally provide free workspace. It’s all about fostering a supportive and collaborative environment.
Use online resources to identify notable angel investors in London. Look for press releases showing investment patterns and industries they are interested in. You can do this on Google but also Linkedin and X/Twitter.
This is actually very time consuming. Searching the web and filling in your spreadsheet with angel investors but also other pre-seed VCs can take full days out of your busy schedule.
To help you with this, we’ve created a comprehensive UK database with angel investors in London, venture capital firms, angel networks and startup accelerators. The original version would have saved me at least a week of painful research, filter and copy/pasting. I have no idea how much time the latest version would save you: 25 days? 1 month?
I've always thought of joining an angel network as the hidden gem of building your investor network... but this has got to be a second.
Find founders of other funded startups!
Founders are busy, yes! But they have just gone through what you're going through. And they know it's tough!
And they love to help!
You'll find the last 3 below with a link to all the latest London startups:

Founders can employ several strategies to actively engage with angel investors beyond traditional networking events and foster an organic, mutually beneficial connection. Firstly, leveraging existing connections by tapping into personal and professional networks can unearth potential investors. Engaging in industry-specific events and becoming an active participant within relevant communities can also create organic connections.
Additionally, founders should focus on building a compelling online presence through platforms like LinkedIn, showcasing their startup journey and attracting investor attention.
Developing a thought leadership role by sharing valuable insights in the startup ecosystem can further establish credibility and draw interest from potential angel investors.
Finally, taking a proactive approach in seeking warm introductions from mentors, advisors, or other entrepreneurs can enhance the likelihood of forming meaningful connections with angel investors.
The selection criteria and focus areas of London startup accelerators vary widely based on their individual goals and specialties. Some may prioritise specific industries, while others focus on diverse sectors.
The benefits for startups participating in these programs extend beyond securing investment. Accelerators offer mentorship, guidance, and access to a network of experienced professionals, fostering overall business development.
Startups can refine their business models, enhance product-market fit, and gain exposure to potential customers and partners. The structured environment accelerators provide can significantly boost a startup's growth, even if direct funding isn't secured, making participation valuable for long-term success.
One noteworthy example could be a founder who, through a personal connection, garnered the interest of a high-net-worth individual with a keen interest in the industry. This connection led to a substantial angel investment, highlighting the impact of personal relationships.
Another example is a founder tapping into industry-specific events and cultivating relationships with fellow entrepreneurs. By actively participating in these events, the founder not only gained insights but also established connections with angel investors interested in the sector. This demonstrates how industry engagement can open doors to funding opportunities.
In a different scenario, a founder effectively utilised online platforms like LinkedIn to showcase their startup journey and achievements. This digital presence attracted attention from angel investors monitoring the startup ecosystem, resulting in a successful investment. These examples underscore the importance of strategic networking, whether through personal connections, industry events, or online visibility, in securing angel investments in London.
